This report is a bit late, as the trip was one week ago today. That said, the triggers are pretty thick on the near shore wrecks and reefs around Destin. This is typical of November and December in these waters. There are red snappers in good numbers, but they're catch-and-release only by law right now. We avoid them, since some will get gut hooked, some will die from decompression even having been vented, and flipper eats them on the way up and on the way down. So, again, we target triggers on short trips this time of year.
I use tiny ass #4 Mustad bronze hooks--which will break occasionally--on a 3 or 4 hook rig, baited with small pieces of squid. You will come up with far fewer cleaned hooks fishing #4's instead of #2's, especially when they're biting light....which they almost always do. Triggerfish used to be an overall length fish, but they went to a fork length a year or two ago. Don't get busted for keeping "'tater chip triggers" that were once legal. |
