Default Mercury Optimax Oil Reserve Alarm

I have now experienced 2/2 or 100% failure rate of the sensor that monitors the oil reservoir level on the engine.

Apparently the float inside the engine mounted tank fails, and starts to send an false reading to the smartcraft computer, which will eventually put the motor into "guardian" (low rev.) mode when it reaches 3% oil remaining...even though the oil system is full and operating correctly.

The mech. I spoke to told me a short term work around (especially if your offshore and can determine that the sensor failed) is to jumper the sensor leads...(I could have used that info on labor day).

I am curious how many other Optimax owners have experienced the false oil level alarm?

I have a 225 Optimax that suddenly started having the same problem. Two things you might check:

There may be air in the engine oil tank that could cause that sensor error. Try loosening the fill cap on the engine oil tank. Start the engine and run until the oil starts to run out of the tank. Retighten cap

Have you checked the oil filter lately?

If none of that works, I'd be interested to know what other postings you've gotten .
