It looks like a thick tar line.I saw an old video that showed them doing a full trip.They talked about the jigs,poles,etc.The fish went into giant chill tanks.Many boats sank because they got overloaded with fish.They would literally sink the boat with fish.They would fill the boat then steam right to the cannery docks.The tuna would then get sucked out of the hold almost frozen then canned in just a few hours.
