Each lure (called jigs) was hand made from a lead head and japanese feathers. They were rigged with barbless hooks and that was how the fish simply fell off when flipped into the holding area. They chummed the fish up then, as they do now, with live sardines. Forget about getting hit with a 40 pounder how about getting your ribs busted when a 200+ pounder crushed you. Often times fish got off and fell in the rack where the fishermen were standing and broke legs as they smashed around. It was dangerous at best. Harry
