Needed some sword steaks for Sunday's sandbar get together so we decided to give it a try today. First drop, bait got wacked but no hookup. We went back to the honey hole and gave it another try. We waited about 15 minutes and again the rod tip started to go crazy just like the previous time, but again no hookup. At this point, we decided to go a little deeper this time and put on a DL special(secret color

). The drift was great, the current was at about 2knots going almost due north and we were able to hold bottom with a 10 lb. weight with no problem. Just as we drifted east of our previous drop spot, the rod bent over. I thought we had caught bottom but I was able to slowly bring line onto the spool . Slowly I started gaining on this mystery fish. After about 40 mins into the fight, the fish started to take out constant drag. He would take off 200 yards and I would put back 200 yards on the spool. After about 1 hour of this tug-a-war, I finally was able to get the wind-on into the spool. A couple of nice gaff shots and he was on the deck. That's when I first noticed that I had actually buried one of the double hooks deep into the side of the fish. The hook had made an 18 inch long and 2 inch deep gash on its side. I guess it was my lucky day today. Measurement 70 inches and very thick.
