I saw a boat pitching baits to a sunning sword about 2 years ago off of Boynton. Think it was less than 300ft of water.

There was another story about a year ago... A couple guys kingfishing north of Boca on a flats boat hooked into a sword with 12lb test. Fought it for about an hour, got it near the boat, but the leader gave way just outside of gaff range.

The only problem with catching swords unexpectedly while fishing nearshore, is it's most likely illegal for folks to kill 'em. Unless they also target tuna or swords, most anglers don't have HMS permits for their boats. Even boats that target sailfish or marlin don't need the permit unless they plan to keep 'em... which is highly discouraged anyway.
