This was definitely angler error. When a fish is straight down and under the boat I tried to tell him to stop raising the rod past 10:00 position. When it snapped he had it hyper-flexed at the 12:00 position. I had him relax, turn the rod off to the side as much as possible, put the reel in low gear and with a slow steady crank, wind the fish up, so it wouldn't feel the need to fight. As soon as I got the leader I sunk the gaff in the head and hauled it onboard. Lucky as hell!
I've decided to build 4 new custom bent butts so that won't happen again.
