I have been reading this thread and can not believe the crazy outlandish suggestions and crazy dock talk that many of you are buying into. My name is Eric Orbesen and I am one of the NOAA scientists that has put these tags out and I am the individual that quality controls all data from PSAT tags. Let me say first and foremost I do not know any longliners, and I can assure you that no one in our offices have been in contact with any longliners about the two deployed PSAT tags.
Secondly, we just received the data from the two tags last week. We get the transmitted data from Argos on a monthly basis, so that means until last week we did not have any data on these fish except for the pop up location.
Third, as to the fish that popped off in South Carolina. It is very interesting that there are reports that the information of where the tag popped off has given longliners new insight on where to fish. I found this remarkable because when we received the cd data we found that there was actually a transmission three days earlier, which we had not received in the email, which actually showed the tag popped off several miles from where the fish was deployed and floated up off North Carolina three days later. This means that the tag was off the fish for three days before the tag reached the Charleston Bump. This is why we prefer to get all the data before we present it. We are trying to work with the sail club on getting this information out to your group, and I can assure you that now that we have the data I will personally be more than happy to come to a meeting in January and present the data to you.
I know all of you are passionate about swordfish, and all of us here at NOAA are every bit as passionate about conservation of all billfish species. Remember, we are biologists, and our duty is to learn as much as we can about these fish and do everything we can to protect the species. I myself am hurt that anyone would question or integrity, or assume there are ulterior motives to our science.
Also, remember we still have one tag sitting in our office, that needs to go out. Anyone who is planning on going out and can bring us along please call us so we can get this tag out. My personal cell phone number is 786-368-7560.
