So, say I catch a tagged sailfish. I SHOULD clip the tag? Why not just get the info and let the fish go with the tag? That way, more data can be collected if that fish is dumb enough to eat a third hook.

OK, Now I'm getting confused trying to write this explanation and can see where ou are having trouble as well. Carlos caught a Sword on The BEAST. We tagged it. John Doe caught the fish that Carlos and I tagged and retagged it with his own (John Doe) tag. John Doe sent the captured tag (Carlos') into TBF with his new information and they notified Carlos that his fish had been recapture. Carlos doesn't remember where TBF said John Doe recaptured Carlos' fish.
Did that do it? I re-read it and I think that will clear it up!?!
TO answer the other question. The last tag I recaptured was on a Sailfish and had some hard scale on it that was hard to get off. Looked like your boat would look without bottom paint, just not as thick. It took me about 15 minutes with a kitchen scrubby thing to halfway read it. Your sword won't last 15 minutes while you try to clean it and then TRY to read it with a flashlight. Just one wrong # and it screws up the catch records. That iis why they want the tag!!!!! They can cut the tag in two and pull the orange insert out of it, I think!
YES! When you catch a tagged fish, clip the tag off as close to the fish as you can. Then, if you have tags you are supposed to put one of your tags back into the fish and it starts a new cycle. If you don't have any tags you simply release it with no tag or take it home to eat. Send the clipped off tag into TBF with the location caught, size, and weight of the fish.
