Here is the report i posted on the FS forum: GREAT NIGHT!
With the amazing weather we decided to give it a go on the North drift tonight. The crew ended up being Myself, my dad (Raptor 1), PJ (JupiterSailfish) and my friend Grayson. One the way out we were cruising along and we see what my dad thinks is a shark on the surface. I turn to look and it is definitely not a shark and possibly a swordfish running away from the boat across the surface. We stop and circle back but cannot find him after we went away... We were in 700 feet. We contine out to the grounds and get the spread in the water around 6:30. While i was getting some more things ready in the stern my dad hears a "click-click" on the bow balloon rod (Squid, 250 feet, Green light). I feed him, feel an AMAZING thump thump, and wind like no other. I get tight but contiune to reel the fish into towards the boat, (im thinking its a pup), while we were getting harnessed up etc the fish takes off and starts to make some good, drag pulling runs. My friend Grayson gets harnessed up (his first trip to the "45") and gets locked in for the next hour and 15 minutes.
With several near disasterous accidents, the fish isnt giving up and we are getting tired. A quick angler change and PJ is on the rod working hard. After a good fight, i take it for the last fifteen to twenty minutes and work the fish really close to the boat. 2nd or 3rd time to the surface we get a shot at him and take a harpoon and gaff shot, and we have him up and over the side and into the boat. It was a true team effort and everything was doing something productive. He's in the boat, (its first) and we are all pumped. Lower Jaw to Fork legnths was 70.5 inches, and the girth was 39, can i get a weight formula please? Its quarter till 9 and we decided to head in and call it the "perfect night". I couldnt have asked for a better night. I learned so much and look foward to getting out there again.
