BAD IN A FOLLOWING SEA

Most if not all catastrophes happen in the inlet. Every thing goes wrong when you put incoming swells up against an out going tide in an inlet. Your thinking your almost home as these mountains of waves pull you into the trough. Its then that the possibility of taking a wave over the stern of your boat can happen. If it dose, the amount of water will render your steering helpless along with your boat and crew. Your bilge pumps will not be able to jettison the extra thousands of pounds of water in your cock pit. If all goes well, eventually you'll get the water out and make another try to get in the inlet when the waves subside. If all does not go well, you'll go side to in the inlet-wait for the next wave and get turned over. As much as I like the Bertrams, no one ever talks about the low design on the stern. I am because it can mean life or death. In addition, a low stern can put people quickly overboard when fighting fish or just doing something random-like pissing off the back. Down south, like in Hatteras where the inlets are just openings in the beach, no captains have a Bertram. Once again, the low stern is the main reason.
